While I don't claim to be an expert in canine anatomy, and know that there are others out there who could do a far better job at rendering it than me, I felt this had to be done. I've seen artists here on deviantART -- even "popular" ones -- draw an animal that is supposed to be a "wolf" but in fact looks more like some sort of husky-fox hybrid or somesort. So here, for your viewing pleasure (and drawing reference) is a comparison of the three types of wild canid I see most often represented on art sites -- the wolf, coyote, and red fox -- and their comparitive anatomy.
Please note: none of these animals is to scale. While the coyote and fox are close, the wolf by all rights should be about 2.5-3x larger than he is. Just a heads up.
Also note: THIS ISN'T STOCK. I should hope that by providing it on a textured background, it would discourage would-be art thieves ... but you just never know. PLEASE DO NOT USE THESE DRAWINGS FOR ANYTHING WITHOUT MY PERMISSION. Thanks.
Tell me what you think, and if you found this useful.
I find this useful The gray wolf really varies in weight! Are they really that much bigger than coyotes or is it just more muscle......or thicker fur? I'm playing around with a character I am developing who is a wolf-coyote mix, but the other characters she talks to are just wolves, so I am trying to make sure I get some basic anatomy details right when comparing them
I'm so sorry it's taken me this long to get back to you! Life takes over sometimes, you know? >_<
Yes, wolves are really that much bigger! And while fur certainly does play a part, if you look at a coyote and a wolf from the same area, you'll see that they're furred in roughly the same way. Wolves are just stockier animals. They have to be -- the wolf way of life is a lot different than a coyote's!
A coyote-wolf hybrid is called a "coywolf", and while they're rare, they're certainly possible. Just in terms of height, you'll see that the average wolf (~ 32") is about double the height of the average coyote (~ 17.5"). Coywolves are intermediate in size - bigger than a coyte, smaller than a wolf. So maybe your coywolf is about 3/4 the size of the wolves (~ 25")? Something like that?
FYI, to make it relative, a wolf is about the same height and weight as the American Mastiff, the coyote as a Brittany or Cocker Spaniel, and the coydog as the German Shepherd.
